Java Podcaster Switches From Linux to Mac OS X

Java Podcaster Tim Shadel switches from Linux to Mac OS X. This is remarkable, especially with the recent departure of some prominent bloggers from the Mac platform in favor of Ubuntu Linux.

Very interesting are the final reasons for switching:

My reasons for choosing to dump Ubuntu for a Mac are almost entirely about the experience. After years of Linux work, I’m tired of fiddling. I’m tired of things that almost work. I’m ready for a change. I’m sick of the war to get things to work. I’m ready to simply Get Things Done. (source)

I see what you mean, Tim. That’s what kept me from using any kind of Linux derivate for longer than a couple of weeks. This “almost works” approach is symptomatic for the Linux world regarding to desktop use. It’s because geeks develop most of the software in their spare time - without a project lead that defines usability issues very precisely. Plus, when you work on something for free, I imagine you tend to try to realize your personal vision instead of that someone else gives you.

As long as this doesn’t get fixed, mainstream-acceptable Desktop Linux is still years and years into the future.
